Substrates

Substrates form the basis of the environment in the terrarium — they affect humidity, cleanliness, the natural behaviour of the animals and the appearance of the whole display. Depending on the species and type of husbandry, different materials are suitable: absorbent and soft substrates for humidity-loving species, loose mixes for burrowing reptiles, or natural materials for tropical terrariums and paludariums. A quality substrate helps maintain stable humidity, makes cleaning easier and supports a healthy environment. When choosing, it is important to consider the specific species' requirements for humidity, absorbency and safety.
